Why Gregslist exists
Hi, I'm Greg Head. The Greg behind Gregslist.
In 2016, I started keeping a list of the software companies in Phoenix because nobody had one. I'd spent 20 years building software companies in Phoenix and had just started advising local founders full time, and the first question every founder, investor, and job seeker asked was the same: who else is here? There was no current, complete answer. I knew hundreds of founders, so I made a list and put it on my blog. I called it Gregslist, since people asked me for my list of local founders every week. Gregslist Phoenix grew to over 500 software companies and has been viewed by over 2 million visitors in the last 10 years.
In 2019, my wife and I moved back to the Dallas area, her hometown, where we first met. I wanted to connect with Dallas founders, but there was no resource, so I created Gregslist Dallas, starting with 310 Dallas–Fort Worth software companies. I built it the same way: one company at a time, researched and verified by a person, and updated as things change. It's free, and it always has been.
This list exists for three reasons.
- Software companies of every size deserve to be findable, not just the ones that raised the most money — found by job seekers, investors, local experts, and other founders.
- Software communities outside Silicon Valley are bigger and better than most people know, and Dallas is one of the best examples.
- More local software companies surviving and scaling is good for the people who work here, the founders who come next, and the city.
History
2016 — Phoenix. The first Gregslist: about 120 Arizona software companies, published on Greg's personal site to help founder friends. Curated by hand and republished every month, it grew to more than 600 companies by 2020.
2019 — Dallas. Dallas became the second Gregslist, and soon the largest.
2020 — gregslist.com. The lists moved to their own site covering 12 cities with over 6,000 companies, including specialized lists by location, funding, industry, and size, an interactive map, and local resources. When COVID hit, we added curated lists of open jobs at local software companies to help people who'd been laid off find the next one.
2026 — Back to Dallas. Gregslist Phoenix was handed off to PHX FWD and the Gregslist Utah lists to The Utah List. Other city lists were retired, and gregslist.com became Gregslist Dallas. One city, done properly, in Greg's home city.
How the list is made
What qualifies. A company is listed when it builds and sells its own software product — SaaS, fintech, marketplace, AI-first — and is headquartered in Dallas–Fort Worth or has a substantial engineering or operating presence here. Bootstrapped, venture-funded, private-equity-owned, public, or acquired are all fine; they're all local companies. Out-of-town companies with real DFW offices are listed and labeled as remote offices.
What doesn't. Agencies, dev shops, IT services and consulting firms, staffing firms, resellers, and systems integrators. Companies whose software is only used internally. Product ideas and prototypes — a company on Gregslist has a public website and a company LinkedIn page its founder actually uses.
What "verified" means. Every listing was checked by a person — Greg and his team, who have kept the list since 2019 and do all the verification — against the company's own website, its LinkedIn page, and public sources. The "Verified by Gregslist" date on each company page is the last time someone looked. Companies are re-checked on a rolling basis, and acquisitions, closures, and moves are marked rather than deleted.
Where the facts come from. We write descriptions in our own words based on what the company says it sells. Founding year, headcount, and location come from the company's site and public records. Funding types and rounds come from Fundable and Crunchbase for venture-backed companies and public filings for public ones. When we don't know something, the field is blank.
Sponsors. Sponsors pay to be visible on the site. They're clearly labeled and never affect which companies are listed or how they're described — see Sponsors.
How the list is made: Anyone can submit a new company, a correction, a funding round, or a closure. A source URL makes review faster.
The Dallas software ecosystem
Dallas–Fort Worth has 606 Dallas-based software companies across 41 cities. 50% of them are bootstrapped. 50 are publicly traded. 126 companies headquartered elsewhere — Workday, Salesforce, Databricks, Datadog among them — run engineering or operations here.
It's a business-software town: ERP, sales and marketing, analytics, HR, and a deep bench of vertical software for healthcare, field service, real estate, hospitality, and energy. Most companies are small — more than half have fifty or fewer employees — and most were built on revenue rather than venture capital.

Greg Head
Greg Head has spent thirty years building and scaling software companies, including two that grew past $100 million in revenue and one that went public. Since 2016, he has worked full time with founders as a mentor, advisor, and investor. A company that builds and sells its own software product and is headquartered in DFW or has a substantial engineering or operating presence here. Agencies, IT services firms, and resellers aren't listed.
How do I get my company listed?
Use the submit form with your company name, city, website, and LinkedIn page. It's free. A person reviews every submission, usually within a week.
Why isn't my company on the list?
Usually one of three reasons: we haven't found you yet, the company doesn't meet the criteria above, or it doesn't have a public website, a company LinkedIn page, and a real connection to Dallas–Fort Worth. Submit it, and we'll take a look.
How often is the list updated?
Continuously. New companies and corrections are added weekly, and every listing is re-verified on a rolling basis. Each company page shows the date it was last checked.
Where does the funding information come from?
From Fundable and Crunchbase for venture rounds, and from public filings for public companies. Bootstrapped companies are marked as such. If a company has raised money we haven't recorded, tell us.
Can I use this data?
Yes, for personal, research, and journalism use. Link to Gregslist Dallas and cite it. Bulk copying, scraping, or republishing the list is not allowed — see Terms.
Who pays for this?
Mostly Greg. It's also supported by a small number of sponsors who pay a flat annual fee to be visible on the site. They're labeled, and they have no say in what's listed. Nobody can pay to be listed, ranked, or described differently.
