Gregslist Dallas
Dallas Software Industry Report
A counted, verified picture of Dallas-based software companies — where they are, what they build, how they are funded, and how big they are — with remote offices counted separately.
Gregslist Dallas
Dallas Software Industry Report
Gregslist counts 606 Dallas-based software companies in Dallas–Fort Worth, plus 126 offices of companies headquartered elsewhere — 732 software companies in all. Every figure below counts Dallas-based companies only, except where a section is labeled remote offices.
Data as of September 29, 2026. Gregslist Dallas, edited by Greg Head.
Dallas-based headline numbers
“Software company” means the company builds and sells its own software product. Agencies, dev shops, staffing firms, resellers and IT services are not on the list.
Five findings
What the numbers say
As of September 29, 2026
- Dallas–Fort Worth is a business-software region: most companies sell to other companies, and the largest categories are the workhorse functions — sales and marketing, accounting and finance, ERP and operations.
- It is a region of small companies. More than half of the companies here have fifty or fewer employees.
- Most of it was not built with venture capital. Bootstrapped companies outnumber venture-funded ones.
- A sixth of the list is an office, not a headquarters — large companies headquartered elsewhere run engineering and operations here.
- The venture number for the region is smaller than national coverage implies, because the biggest rounds credited to Dallas belong to companies headquartered elsewhere.

Ownership
Who owns Dallas software companies?
As of September 29, 2026
606 Dallas-based companies, of which 500 are privately held, 90 have been acquired, and 15 are publicly traded. Acquired and public companies stay on the list; they are still here.
Privately held includes bootstrapped, venture-backed and private-equity-owned companies — see How they are funded for the breakdown.

Dallas proper is the largest single city, but the story of the region is the northern corridor — Plano, Richardson, Frisco, Addison — where most of the product companies actually sit.

Categories among Dallas-based companies
As of September 29, 2026
868 category tags across 606 Dallas-based companies. Most companies carry one tag; a few carry two. 569 tags describe what the software does (a business function) and 299 describe the industry it serves.

Category counts count tags, not companies: a company with two tags is counted in both. Every company carries at least one tag.
This is not a consumer-software town. The categories that dominate are the ones that sell to businesses, and the vertical categories follow the region's older industries.

Funding type mix for Dallas-based companies
As of September 29, 2026
Each Dallas-based company carries one funding position. 67 companies have no funding position recorded — stated here rather than hidden, and never folded into another group.
Funding coverage
124 of 606 Dallas-based companies (20.5%) have at least one funding round recorded, across 210 rounds and 296 investors. Disclosed rounds only. Round-level detail exists for a subset of listed companies; figures cover the scope named beside them.
The 67 companies with no recorded position are mostly acquired companies whose position before the acquisition was never recorded.
Bootstrapped is the norm here, and it is a feature rather than a gap. The companies that raised late tend to have raised less and kept more.

Dallas-based company size and employee bands
As of September 29, 2026
Headcount is recorded as a band, never a precise number. The size label follows the band and is shown with it throughout.
| Employees | Size label | Companies | Share | Share chart |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1–10 | Startup (1–10) | 151 | 24.9% | |
| 11–50 | Small (11–50) | 230 | 38% | |
| 51–200 | Medium (51–200) | 145 | 23.9% | |
| 201–500 | Large (201–1,000) | 37 | 6.1% | |
| 501–1,000 | Large (201–1,000) | 23 | 3.8% | |
| 1,001–5,000 | Enterprise (1,001+) | 9 | 1.5% | |
| 5,001–10,000 | Enterprise (1,001+) | 8 | 1.3% | |
| 10,001+ | Enterprise (1,001+) | 3 | 0.5% |
Size labels: Startup (1–10), Small (11–50), Medium (51–200), Large (201–1,000), Enterprise (1,001+).
The middle of this list — eleven to two hundred people — is where the region's software employment actually lives.

Limits
What this report does not say
As of September 29, 2026
- It counts companies, not jobs or revenue.
- It counts funding rounds we could verify. No recorded funding does not mean no raise.
- Headcount is a band, and for an office of a company headquartered elsewhere the band reflects the whole company.
- The list is a floor. Companies we have not found yet are not in the count.
- Unknown values are reported as unknown and never estimated.
Methodology
How the numbers are made
As of September 29, 2026
Scope
Every main-section figure covers the 606 Dallas-based, published, non-deleted companies on Gregslist Dallas, across all lifecycle statuses — privately held, acquired and public. Remote offices are separated into the “Headquartered elsewhere, building here” section and are not folded into the other figures.
Counting
Every number on this page is produced by one of three aggregate functions in the database and is recomputed when the page loads. No figure is typed in, and no figure is counted twice by two different methods. Each number links to the filtered list that produces it, so it can be checked.
Unknowns
Where a value is not known it is reported as unknown, never estimated and never folded into another group. 67 companies have no funding position recorded; 0 have no founding year.
Not reported
Three things are deliberately absent. Most-funded companies are held back pending a correction in review. Year-over-year change is absent because no earlier snapshot exists — the first comparison will appear in the next edition. AI counts are absent because the flag measures our tagging so far, not the industry.
Verification
Records are checked by a person and carry a verification date and a source. Corrections are welcome and are usually applied within a week — how verification works.
First PDF edition — January 2027
This page is the live version and is current on every load. The first printed edition will be published in January 2027: the same counts as of December 31, 2026, plus a cover, five findings, written commentary on each section, outside rankings with sources, an ecosystem directory, a statement of limits, and the first year-over-year comparison.
Sponsors
Gregslist Dallas is made available for free with the support of its sponsors. Sponsors pay to support the work. They do not influence which companies are listed, how they are described, or the order in which they appear, and they have no say in this report.
